A three-dimensional rendering of the Tesla Cybertruck floating in the ocean has emerged on Instagram showing a man in the truck’s “vault”, enjoying a day on the water in a futuristic car-boat.
The video by hypercarislands gives passionate fishermen an idea of how Tesla’s first pickup could double as an amphibious car in “Boat Mode.” The man in the back of the Cybertruck in the rendering is visibly happy, enjoying beautiful weather while catching fish in a floating Tesla.
Underwater vehicles are something Musk has been vocal about in the past, especially when it comes to the idea of a submarine car. While Tesla vehicles in the past have performed impressively when confronted with deep water, no Tesla vehicle has ever taken on a body of water as large as an ocean.
After a Model S easily navigated through a flooded tunnel in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 2016, Musk tweeted that while “We *def* don’t recommend this, but Model S floats well enough to turn it into a boat for short periods of time. Thrust via wheel rotation.” In May 2019, another Model S “floated” through a flooded neighborhood somewhere in the United States.
During the annual Shareholder meeting in 2019, Musk shared Tesla’s design for an all-electric submarine vehicle, much like the one from the 1977 James Bond film, “The Spy Who Loved Me,” recognized as “Wet Nellie.” Musk enjoyed the idea of an underwater vehicle so much, purchased the car, a Lotus Espirit S1, in 2013 for £550,000.
After being asked by an individual shareholder if the company would ever develop and release a car that would work underwater, Musk said, “You can actually have a submarine car — it’s like technically possible. I think the market for this will be small. Small but enthusiastic. It would be a bit of a distraction but maybe we’ll make one as a show car.”
A man of many passions, Musk has successfully created a car company that produces high-performance electric vehicles, and a separate entity responsible for sending ships into outer space. With that information, it seems completely feasible that the head of Tesla and SpaceX could create a car, or boat, that would operate in water deep enough to fish in. While much of the world is still taking in the Cybertruck and its many features, it is unlikely it will be the subject of a redesign making it optimal for a day out on the water.
