The Chicago-based Amity Packing Company issued a recall Friday of about 2,020 pounds of raw ground beef that might be contaminated with extraneous materials.
The issue was discovered after Pre Brands LLC received two consumer complaints about "clear, thin pliable plastic" found in raw ground beef.
According to the recall, there have been no reports of adverse reactions from consuming these products. Those concerned about injury or illness should speak to a healthcare provider.
The raw ground beef products recalled were produced on January 6, 2020. One pound vacuum-packed packages with "Pre 95% Lean/5% Fat Ground Beef" with lot code "0060," and case code "11402" were recalled.
The affected products had a January 31, 2020 "USE/FREEZE BY" date on their product label. Establishment number "EST 6916" is printed on the front right side of the packaging. The products were shipped to Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The USDA classified this recall as a Class II recall.
"This is a health hazard situation where there is a remote probability of adverse health consequences from the use of the product," the USDA description for a Class II recall reads. The USDA also listed the health risk as low.
A spokesperson for Pre Brands LLC told Newsweek that the company identified the potential issue quickly and issued the recall. "
We had identified, based on two consumer complaints, a very limited run of packaging of our 95 percent lean/five percent ground beef with the use/freeze by date of January 31, 2020 was potentially contaminated with small soft clear plastic pieces. We had received two consumer complaints, which we then remedied fairly quickly, contained and determined exactly which items were affected and the timing in which they were affected. We did a voluntary recall with the USDA/FSIS," the Pre Brands spokesperson told Newsweek.
Consumers who have these products are instructed to dispose of them or return them at the point of purchase. "FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers' refrigerators or freezers," the recall said. "Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase."
Consumers with questions about the recall are told to call Pre Brands LLC at 1-844-773-3663.
The USDA did not immediately respond to emailed request for comment.
Another recall issued on Friday saw 12,054 pounds of ready-to-eat Siluriformes products recalled by Golden Pearl Trading Corporation that were "not presented for import re-inspection into the United States."
