A bicyclist who may have been trying to cut in front of a SMART commuter train in San Rafael was killed on Friday evening when he instead lost control of his bike and fell into the train’s path.
The accident occurred at around 7 p.m. Friday at the North San Pedro Road crossing of the Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit, according to Sgt. Rob Cleland of the San Rafael Police Department.
The crossing is on a busy roadway near the county’s Civic Center. The victim was a 36-year-old man whose identity has not been made public.
“The gates were down, the lights were blinking and the train’s bells were active,” Cleland said. “Obviously, we don’t know what was in his mind,” but the accounts of people on the scene suggest that the bicyclist was trying to cross the track before the two-car train rolled through. Instead, he struck the gate and fell off his bike onto the tracks as the train approached.
The train conductor saw what was happening and slammed on his brake, Cleland said, but was unable to stop in time.
Fatal incidents, though unusual, are not new for SMART. At least nine pedestrians or cyclists have died after being hit by a train since the North Bay commute line began service in 2017. A SMART representative could not be reached for comment on Sunday evening.
