July 17 -- To the Editor:
How many needless deaths will it take for our society to wake up and follow the rules and guidelines of our doctors, not our politicians and so-called business leaders?
I vividly and painfully remember the Vietnam years. Each day, newscasters reported the number of American soldiers wounded and killed. For many of us, those were just numbers on the T.V. screen until we personally knew someone who was killed, and then, it really hit home and really hit hard.
I remember too well, standing there in 1967, with hundreds of friends and neighbors at the funeral of my best friend’s nineteen year-old brother. We finally came together as a nation and helped to end that tragedy but not before losing 50,000 young Americans. As of this writing, we have lost 138,000 Americans to the virus.
So here we are living the year of stupid—indifference to the virus—indifference to reality—no masks—no social distancing—opening businesses too soon—and in the process of opening schools too soon—just can’t think of a more descriptive word than stupid.
The U.S. Government has the money and resources to keep us all with food, shelter and clothing. The U.S. Government has the money and resources to forgive loans, to restructure the economy, to distribute money and to get us through until we are all vaccinated.
But the U.S. Government means politicians. During the Vietnam years, we now know that we were all lied to by four U.S. Presidents, two Republican and two Democrat, and all for the sole purpose of their re-elections. And now, the same thing is happening—re-election over life—money over life; this is a bipartisan effort—Democrats and Republicans share equally in the selfishness and greed.
And while I might feel bad for calling out millions of Americans for their behavior—stupid, and for calling out all of our politicians for their behavior—selfish and greedy, the TRUTH is that 138,000 Americans have lost their lives to the virus and we are actively opening up more businesses and are about to open up all schools…..
Can we come together and stop the tragedy as we did during the Vietnam years, yes? The more important question is, will we?
