There have been so many times where we mentioned how completely segregated the smart home market is. It’s a mess, cluttered with proprietary ecosystems that do not work between each other or offer limited support through bridge solutions like Alexa or Google. Usually, it is because these companies want you to be tethered to their portfolio of products. Thankfully, there are options out there that help break you out of these limited environments. Options like Zigbee and Z-Wave. Now, the Zigbee Alliance is pushing harder than ever to try to unify everything together with Project CHIP.
The whole idea is bringing everything together to work under one open-source standard so that all devices may someday fully support a single ecosystem of devices throughout your home without any hoops to jump through. CHIP (Connected Home over IP), is that new standard, that hopefully, companies will be willing to adopt.
So the question is, will companies run with it? So far, the answer is yes. In fact, some of the largest companies have been huge supporters and members of the alliance helping to push this forward. Companies like Apple, Amazon, Google, and more. This is what sets it apart from some of the other similar options in the market, like Z-Wave (that, and the fact that it will make use of your standard Wi-Fi network vs proprietary frequencies). With the biggest names backing these efforts from the start, it is bound to go somewhere.
The project has been slowly making its way through the certification process and we will finally see some of the first compatible devices enter the market later this year.
