THANJAVUR: Tamil Nadu minister for agriculture and farmers welfare M R K Panneerselvam courted a controversy on Monday by telling a journalist that “if you ask a stupid question, you will get a stupid reply.”
The journalist asked the minister about the “rampant corruption” at direct procurement centres (DPCs) in the state. There were complaints that farmers were forced to pay a bribe of Rs 40 per sack of paddy.
The minister was addressing a press conference in Thanjavur. He was here to review the preparedness for kuruvai cultivation in Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts.
District secretary of Thanjavur district Cauvery Farmers’ Protection Association S Vimalanathan condemned the unscrupulous remarks of the minister. “It was unbecoming of a minister. Being the farmers’ welfare minister, he could have replied in a normal tone instead of ignoring the question,” said Vimalanathan.
He sought the intervention of chief minister M K Stalin in the issue and also asked the agriculture minister to render an apology in an open forum.
Tamilaga Lake and River Irrigation Farmers Association’s state president P Viswanathan too expressed his displeasure over the way the agriculture handled the question on the welfare of the farmers. “The complaint of a bribe raised by the journalist was true. We had even staged demonstrations over the issue then. The question was posed to the minister so that such issues can be curtailed now. The minister should not have made such an inappropriate reaction,” said Viswanathan.
