BOONE, N.C. – App State senior Meghan Smart can add another accolade to her growing collection.
After the senior forward’s breakout season on the pitch, she has earned All-South Region second-team honors from the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA).
Smart is the fourth Mountaineer since 2001 to earn all-region distinction, according to NFHCA archives. Emily Walls earned the honor in 2002, Nara Brooks in 2003 and Veerle Van Heertum in 2018.
A native of Haddonfield, New Jersey, Smart led the Mid-American Conference with a career-high 12 goals and 28 points this spring on her way to becoming App State’s first MAC Offensive Player of the Year honoree. Nationally, she was 15th in goals per game and 19th in points per contest.
In the series sweep of Bellarmine, Smart scored five goals, including a hat trick, and was named MAC Offensive Player of the Week. She is the school’s No. 10 all-time goal scorer with 26 in her career.
Smart, who graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders, is one of 13 players from North Carolina to be named to an all-region team. She joins seven players from UNC, three from Wake Forest and two from Duke.
The National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) is a nonprofit organization serving field hockey coaches and supporters of the game from across the United States. The mission of the organization is to stimulate the professional development of coaching leadership within the sport of field hockey. The NFHCA strives to cultivate and recognize the professional contributions of its membership and to foster and promote the growth of the sport. The NFHCA is responsible for providing a recognizable presence and voice in regard to legislation affecting the sport as well as interscholastic and intercollegiate programs.
