Using publicly-displayed Maori artwork to justify erecting a symbol of colonisation, ie Endeavour models, is just stupid.
What Cook and his crew did here in the Tairawhiti in 1769 was nothing short of murder while committing home invasion.
So I suggest — to save some activist in the future the opportunity to tie a rope around the “if erected Endeavour models”, pull them down, drag them along Gladstone Road and throw them into the Turanganui River — don't erect them in the first place.
My ancestry through Iritukura takes me back to the dawn of Maori history in this area.
Some of the people elected to council are relative newcomers here, and it disappoints me that they could even think of pushing a motion like this through without consulting local iwi. But in any event, good luck to them for their efforts to serve the people in this area. May they do better in the future.
But just remember this, to those who were affected by the 1769 home invasion and murder of family members by Cook and his crew, erecting those models of the “Endeavour” will be like rubbing their noses in the blood spilt on their own front doorstep. Where is the unity in that?
For those who say it's part of our history, where in Germany will you find publicly-displayed memorabilia of Adolf Hitler and his cohorts; isn't that “part” of their “history”?
I need not point to the bigots who write some of the letters to the editor. You need only read this page for a period of time and you will see they stand out like beacons in the night.
