Golden State Warriors rookie big man James Wiseman could return from his knee injury this season. He probably won’t, based on reports from Wednesday. Either way, at least one former NBA player cautions fans frustrated with the 20-year-old’s first year to be careful about hoping he gets traded in the off-season.
After it was reported that Wiseman suffered a torn meniscus in his right knee, ESPN analysts Richard Jefferson and Kendrick Perkins discussed the injury and its implications on the rest of the Warriors’ season and next year. On the idea of trading Wiseman for veteran help to complement Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, Jefferson was blunt.
“Hey Warrior fans, don’t be stupid,” Jefferson said, hearkening back to an almost-trade the Warriors didn’t make. “Remember when they were talking about Klay Thompson being traded for Kevin Love?”
For those who don’t remember, Warriors owner Joe Lacob and general manager Bob Myers were reportedly close to dealing Thompson to Minnesota for Love in 2014, until executive Jerry West and coach Steve Kerr vetoed the trade and West threatened resignation.
All Thompson did after that was play a starring role on three Warriors championships in four seasons, while Love’s productivity sank.
“Wiseman is a very special player and he’s going to be a very special player for a long time,” Jefferson said. “You want to maximize Steph (Curry), but there’s probably only two players – maybe a Bradley Beal, maybe somebody else. There’s not too many players out there that you would actually warrant” a trade.
Whether Wiseman’s trade value with his current injury is high enough to be involved in a package for Wizards All-Star Beal seems uncertain, especially until more is known about his timetable for recovery.
Wiseman, the No. 2 overall draft pick in 2020, was to undergo surgery on his knee later this week, according to multiple reports Wednesday, including the San Francisco Chronicle and The Athletic. (SFGATE and the San Francisco Chronicle are both owned by Hearst but operate independently of one another.)
The shorter end of Wiseman’s recovery would be four to six weeks, if he merely has the damaged meniscus trimmed. At that point, the Warriors could be competing in the NBA’s play-in tournament to make the playoffs, though they’d likely not rush back such a valuable young player.
A full repair of the meniscus could keep Wiseman out of action a lot longer, forcing him to miss summer league and a possible spot on the Team USA Select Team.
“This guy can be your future for the next 10 years,” Jefferson said in the segment. “So be patient, use the talent that you have, and you’re going to be OK.”
