Kirstie Alley Tells Tucker Carlson She Was 'Stupid' Voicing Support for Donald Trump - Newsweek

Kirstie Alley has spoken out about the backlash she faced over her support of former President Donald Trump.

The actress, known for her roles in Cheers and the Look Who's Talking film series, claims her outspoken support of Trump led her to be blackballed in Hollywood, where conservative views don't go down well.

She recalled that after she first spoke about her intention to vote for Trump in 2016, some producers with similar views told her they had decided to stay silent over fears they would "never work again."

"People go: 'You're so brave.' I go: 'No, I think I'm stupid.' Because honestly... it is a real blackballing situation," Alley, 70, said during an appearance on Fox Nation's Tucker Carlson Today on Wednesday.

She claims her political views cost her numerous famous followers on social media, noting by contrast that her friends and peers didn't have an issue when she voted for former President Barack Obama, a Democrat.

"You can be cooking meth and sleeping with hookers, but as long as, apparently, you didn't vote for Trump... I feel like I'm in The Twilight Zone a bit, with the whole concept of it," she added.

"On Twitter, I had many celebrities followed me, and now I think three follow me," she said. "I'm the same person. I'm the girl who voted for Obama, twice. And I'm like, 'Oh, so you liked me when I voted for Obama, and now you're this?' And it's made me have to rethink, weirdly, my whole friendships, all my friendships."

Back in October, Alley sparked a Twitter storm when she declared her intention to vote for Trump, a Republican, in the 2020 presidential election because "he's NOT a politician."

Some critics have denounced Alley for her continued support of Trump, citing his administration's mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The former president on Wednesday issued a statement heaping praise on Alley.

"She is a great actress, loved by so many people, and a true original," he said. "She is also strong and smart. Many millions of people greatly appreciate her support of our Country. Thank you Kirstie, you are truly appreciated!"

Alley responded to the statement in a tweet, where she lamented that Trump was no longer on Twitter.

"Just got a very kind acknowledgment. Thank you Sir, I wish you were still on Twitter ..as you should be," she wrote.

Trump was permanently banned from the platform after Twitter ruled that his posts may have encouraged his supporters to storm the U.S. Capitol on January 6.

On Wednesday, 35 House Republicans joined Democrats in voting to create a bipartisan commission to investigate the deadly attack, and that bill will now go to the Senate.
