After an instant classic of a performance against the mighty Brooklyn Nets in Game 3 of his Boston Celtics’ first-round series against their Atlantic Division opponents, All-NBA small forward Jayson Tatum inched closer to cementing his status among the league’s superstars with a 50-point outing on Friday night.
Putting his team on his back, the Duke product refused to let go of the rope in a must-win postseason situation. Tatum attacked the cup with merciless, almost unstoppable force while peppering his assault with an array of difficult jumpers, often with a hand in his face — or several of them.
“The way he was locked in … his mentality [was] attack, attack, attack, and just keep going no matter what the outcome was,” shared teammate Marcus Smart when asked by the press what impressed him the most about the star wing’s big game.
"His play, he never let it deteriorate if he was scoring or not," added Smart. The historic display left Head Coach Brad Stevens nearly at a loss for words. "He's so advanced ... for 23 years old," he opined.
"I've said the word special, I don't say that word very often. He just has a unique ability to score the ball, to slither through seams to find angles to score. But then he's also got the vision to make every right read. He was super tonight."
"But he's been like that a lot this year," Stevens finished. "He's special." https://twitter.com/TheCelticsWire/status/1398660435994460162?s=20
For someone who ostensibly rarely uses the word, Stevens struggled to find other synonyms that did the St. Louis native justice after willing his team to a win against perhaps the most dangerous team in the league. With the seeming ability to spit out a historic performance any time he can muster the motivation to do so, we can relate in the dearth of appropriate superlatives useful in describing what is beginning to look like a generation talent.
