Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart received a technical foul and was ejected from Sunday night’s game against the Portland Trail Blazers for hitting Trail Blazers center Jusuf Nurkic in the groin area with his left arm.
Smart was attempting to defend C.J. McCollum when Nurkic stepped out to set a screen on Smart. Smart’s left arm hit Nurkic and both dropped to the ground after the collision, resulting in a stoppage of play.
You can see video of the play below. According to Chris Mannix of NBC Boston, there was a lengthy review to tell if the play was intentional or not, and it resulted in Smart’s ejection.

The ejection was a very notable one in the game and one could argue it played a major part in the Celtics suffering a 129-119 loss. Smart was ejected from the game with just 1:56 left to play with the Celtics trailing by three points. Smart had 11 points on the night at the time of his ejection and Portland would go on to close the game on a 9-2 run.
The loss for Boston was the fourth in the previous six games. Before this rough stretch, the Celtics had won nine of their previous 11 games but have since gone cold. Boston now sits at 34-31 on the season, which puts it in fourth place in the Atlantic Division and seventh overall in the Eastern Conference. Being in seventh place has Boston in the NBA’s play-in tournament in the postseason.
