As if an injury-riddled, twisting season wasn’t enough, the Celtics players were thrown another abrupt change into their lives one day after their season came to a close. Hours after Boston was eliminated in the playoffs by the Brooklyn Nets, Danny Ainge retired and Brad Stevens became the franchise’s new president of basketball operations.
That’s a lot to digest in such a short timeframe. Marcus Smart reflected on that season in an Instagram post, adding it felt like he “played basically two starts in one year it seems.” Smart has publicly said that it’s been a tough year for him personally as he grappled with the loss of those close to him. But he persevered through a brutal season, though the end result wasn’t quite what the C’s were looking for.
“What a crazy year, but it was amazing to be able to finish out the season in front of a full house at TD Garden,” Smart wrote. “Wish we could have had a different result but it will only make me work harder. There’s a few people I wanted to thank. First, I want to thank the best fans in the world for continuing to support us.”
Then it was on to thanking both Ainge and Stevens, both of whom have been with the organization since Smart was drafted No. 6 overall in the 2014 NBA Draft. For the first time in his career as the longest-tenured Celtic, Smart will see movement in the coaching staff and front office.
Smart got in a little playful jab on Ainge, too.
“Next I want to thank Danny Ainge for believing in me and drafting me 7 years ago,” Smart wrote. “You have always had my back and I really appreciate it. Can’t wait for u to cheat ur score against me on the golf course! U deserve it!
“Lastly I want to thank the entire coaching staff and everyone behind the scenes who helps make this all possible. Coach Stevens, well now President Stevens-thank you! Can’t wait to continue this journey. Looking forward to next season already! Year 7 (checkmark).”
