Dallas will need a whole lot more than courage when they face off with the Buccaneers in week one.
Jerry Jones has unwittingly given the Buccaneers fanbase another depth of fodder to throw against the Cowboys in the weeks leading up to the regular season. The trash talk has already begun, and Jones’ recent comments could put the Bucs in the lead for now.
In a quote tweeted out by TJ Rives between Jones and the NFL Network, the owner of the Cowboys is praying for the courage for his team to show up against the juggernaut Buccaneers. At least Jones knows where his team stands in the upcoming matchup.
We don’t want to get into too many David and Goliath comparisons here, as we know how that ended up, but there is a pretty massive difference between where the Bucs and the Cowboys are today. The Cowboys have a much more storied history, but Tampa has owned this century by comparison.
The Buccaneers are currently the best team in the NFL by a mile. After bringing back all of their starters, supplementing their depth in free agency and the draft well, and having a full offseason to continue building chemistry, the defending champs will be hard to beat by anyone, even Dallas.
While the Cowboys are often the butt end of jokes about modern irrelevance championed by Stephen A. Smith, they still have a very good team for 2021.
Dak Prescott is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL. Even coming off a season-ending injury, Prescott has every tool to stay one of the best quarterbacks in the league, and there isn’t an argument against it. Whether it is through his individual stats, wins (which aren’t a stat, but people bring those up regardless), and any other metric that isn’t “he is the quarterback of the Cowboys, so he has to suck,” Prescott is much better than he gets credit for.
When you add in a competent wide receiver group, offensive line, and a decent running back when he’s on, the Cowboys have one of the better offenses in the league.
The defense was the main struggle for Dallas last season, but after an offseason focused on revamping the secondary and adding the best linebacker draft pick since Devin White, this Cowboys team has every bit of talent to be the best one in years.
Unfortunately for Jerry Jones and company, every one of these improvements pales in comparison to what the Bucs bring to the table. Parsons may be an exciting draft pick, but he is no Lavonte David. CeeDee Lamb can make great catches under pressure, but he still isn’t Chris Godwin.
Don’t even get us started on the Buccaneer defense. The unit this season is probably good enough to carry Andy Dalton, and that Cowboys team from last year to the Super Bowl by itself-there isn’t a comparison between the two this year.
Dallas has made almost all of the right moves to take steps forward in the weakest division in football, but even Jerry Jones knows how long the odds are for his team in week one.
With the Cowboys projected to be one of the better playoff teams in the league this upcoming season, it’s reassuring that even their biggest fan and owner is clearly concerned about just showing up when his team faces the best team in the NFL.
