ARLINGTON, Texas — Earlier in the week, Cowboys linebacker Leighton Vander Esch complained about fans criticizing Dallas players on social media, calling that treatment “classless” and “ridiculous.”
On Sunday, Vander Esch had no problem mocking the Giants in his post-game press conference after the Cowboys won, decisively, 44-20.

In a lot of ways, the Cowboys got the better of the Giants, dominating offensively though a bruising rushing attack. And they mostly contained the offense — other than Kadarius Toney — in a dominant win. Emotions got the better of the Giants, too: Toney was ejected with six minutes left in the game after throwing a punch at the end of a scrum.
It was a physically demoralizing loss for the Giants, who lost quarterback Daniel Jones, running back Saquon Barkley and No. 1 wide receiver Kenny Golladay to injuries just in the first half.
But Vander Esch didn’t find it especially physically demanding from the Cowboys perspective.
“I thought we controlled the tempo,” Vander Esch said. “My body feels good right now, so I don’t feel like it was an extremely physical game. I think we brought it to them every single snap the way we could, and I think we outhit them tonight. So, you can say it’s a physical game and all that, but there’s going to be games that are more physical than others.
“I didn’t come out of this game feeling like: ‘Oh, my gosh, I’m freaking battered, or I got a bunch of bumps and bruises.’”
The Giants managed only 73 rushing yards, though Barkley had just two carries before injuring his ankle. Devontae Booker became the primary running back, and he rushed for 42 yards on 16 carries — and didn’t break a lot of tackles.
Vander Esch mocked the Giants for a fight at the end of the game between Toney and Cowboys defensive back Damontae Kazee. Giants head coach Joe Judge said Toney’s punch and ejection are “not going to be accepted. It’s not going to be condoned.”
Vander Esch said he could tell at that point the Giants — trailing 34-13 — were getting frustrated.
“Absolutely, we know we’re going to be in situations like that and as a defense we’ve got to learn to be smart in those situations and know that teams are probably going to get a little chippy against us if things are going our way,” Vander Esch said. “Everyone wants to beat us, everyone is going to give us their best, whether that is being chippy or whether that’s just putting a nose down every single play. We’ve got to just look them in the eye and say let’s go. It don’t matter.
“If you guys want to be chippy and you guys want to get stupid calls, penalties thrown at you, go ahead.”
At least he didn’t criticize the Giants on social media.
