After a two year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the beloved Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo has returned in 2022, bringing thousands of Texans together for its comeback. The massive event started on February 28 and runs until March 20.
With the rodeo returning, a viral TikTok called out the Houston event for being "stupid" packed this year. TikTok user exotixalex racked up more than 2.6 million views and over 250,000 likes after showing thousands of people standing side by side at a night out at the rodeo. The video was posted last weekend.
In 2020, organizers canceled the Houston Rodeo mid-run after the coronavirus started to hit more than 100,000 cases worldwide. The following year, in 2021, the rodeo didn't open its gates at all. The annual event typically draws millions of visitors and hundreds of millions of dollars to the economy.
The total attendance for all activities on the ground in 2019 reached 2,506,263 people, according to the rodeo's website. It was the same year when country artist George Strait set an attendance record for any event in NRG Stadium with 80,108 people.
Due to the decline in hospitalizations and mask restrictions lifting in Texas, it seems more and more people are getting comfortable being in large crowds. However, many folks in the TikTok comments don't agree.
"funky covid," frank livera wrote.
"Ah hell nah a new Covid variant," None commented.
"That's what happens when you take Rodeo away from us for 2 years," Hayven mentioned.
It's unclear what the attendance numbers are so far, but TikTok user Nikke_nic81 pointed out how the viral TikTok shows what it looks like after a concert. She added she works there and it's not that bad.
