TAMPA, Florida — Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) touted his record opposing school COVID-19 policies, supporting parental rights, and opposing "indoctrination" in schools during a Friday speech to hundreds of parent activists at the Moms for Liberty National Summit.
DeSantis, widely seen as a contender for the 2024 Republican nomination for president, recounted his administration's legislative accomplishments, including enacting the Parental Rights in Education Act , which barred classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity through third grade, and was denounced by liberal opponents as a "don't say gay" bill.

"What we've done, maybe better than any other state in the country, is we have drawn a very clear line in the sand that says our school system is for educating kids, not indoctrinating kids," DeSantis told the cheering crowd. "We've also drawn a clear line in the sand that says parents have a fundamental role in the education of their kids."
While a handful of counterprotesters stood outside the Marriott in downtown Tampa with signs reading, "Teach real history," in reference to parent opposition to critical race theory, the crowd inside was teeming with excitement as the Florida governor hit back against woke corporate culture.
DeSantis recounted the backlash aimed at his state government for passing the Parental Rights in Education Act, most notably the public opposition expressed by the Walt Disney Company. Following the company's public vow to repeal the law, DeSantis and the Florida legislature repealed Disney's special self-governance zone in the area encompassing Disney World.
The backlash from Disney, he said, was a bit of a surprise. The governor dismissively said he expected "the Left would have their spasm," but he added, "I honestly didn't think that companies were going to say anything again."
"All I'm doing is trying to defend parents," DeSantis said. "The reality is Americans are sick of some of these companies and their stupid activism."
"It's one thing to advance things in the political arena, but when they can't get things done through the ballot box, they use corporate power to do it and to impose a leftist agenda through corporate America," the governor continued. "You've got to be concerned about that."
DeSantis, who is running for reelection as governor, noted that he might be "a little bit more sensitive" about forcing kindergarten students to listen to classes on gender identity and sexual orientation because he has three small children.
He vowed to keep Florida free of corporate influence.
"I've got to go out as a leader and make sure people understand that [Disney] do[es] not run the state of Florida," he said. "We're not going to have our leadership subcontracted out to a corporation with close ties to the CCP and that's based in Burbank, California."

In perhaps a veiled preview of the 2024 presidential race, DeSantis did not waste the opportunity to criticize President Joe Biden for high gas prices and inflation — mockingly referring to the president as "Brandon."
"When you see Brandon blundering around, bad energy policy you see every time you go fill up gas, and there's the grocery bills, there's a lot to be pessimistic about, particularly in terms of Washington, D.C.," DeSantis said, but "in the state of Florida ... [the] sun is rising."
