FLINT, MI -- Flint Bishop Airport says it’s the first airport in the nation to equip police officers with Smart Helmets that can read people’s temperatures using thermal imaging and identify wanted criminals through facial recognition technology.

Officials from the airport and KeyBiz, an Italian manufacturer, announced the partnership in a virtual news conference Friday, Aug. 28, and said the new equipment will initially be used to detect temperatures in order to identify people who might have a fever and may have COVID-19.

The helmets, which cost $10,000 each, can also facially scan individuals in the airport and detect matches with photographs that are uploaded to the device, allowing police to detect wanted criminals, suspects and missing persons, Bishop officials said in announcing the new technology.

“This device is a game-changer,” Airport Director Nino Sapone said in a statement issued by Bishop. “It has the ability to perform several functions, including detecting the temperature of multiple people at a distance of up to 21 feet with precision accuracy.

“The helmet is the first mobile platform of its kind, allowing our police officers the flexibility to walk the terminal building and randomly screen both incoming and outgoing passengers. We couldn’t be more pleased to be partnering with KeyBiz to spearhead the incorporation of this advanced technology in the United States.”

The airport said in a news release that it is the first business of any kind in the United States to use the Smart Helmet, which has been used elsewhere in the world, including Rome Airport.

They said that once a helmet detects a person with a temperature above 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, the officer wearing the device will approach the passenger and accompany the individual to the ticket counter of the airline they are or were flying, advising the airline of the high temperature. The airline will determine whether the passenger will fly or be denied boarding.

“If the individual with an elevated temperature is not a passenger, they will be asked to leave the terminal building in the name of health and safety,” the airport said in a news release. “The officer will also ask for their name and attempt to identify whether or not they came in contact with anybody else while in the terminal.”

The new equipment will be registered and policies and procedures will be developed for using the helmets before they are put to use, said Autumn Perry-MacClaren, an airport spokeswoman.
