To work in an historic residence such as Rideau Hall was rewarding and an honour. Many of the staff members I worked with had been there for most or all of their working years, serving in unique and varied positions. They brought, and many continue to bring, a level of expertise, dedication and loyalty which is commendable. State visitors and their delegations would often comment on the professionalism and warmth of the staff they met during their visit.
Much has been said and written about the value versus the cost of the office and residence. As one who has had the privilege of seeing and hearing from the many Canadians and international visitors who have been to Rideau Hall, I know it is truly a treasure worth preserving.

Defining equal treatment
Re: Denley: In O’Toole, Conservatives have found a winner, Aug. 25
While a balanced and thoughtful analysis of the Conservatives’ recent choice of Erin O’Toole as party leader, Randall Denley’s call for “a radical new idea — treating all Canadians equally” begs an important question. What does equal treatment of all Canadians actually look like when it is perfectly obvious many Canadians do not already enjoy their full share of equality?

O’Toole’s pledge to defund the CBC won’t fly
Newly-elected Conservative Party Leader Erin O’Toole is calling for some form of defunding the CBC. This makes little sense.
Past prime ministers have been critical of the CBC. Usually, Conservatives see leftist bias, while Liberals suspect intrusion by Quebec separatists. Examples supporting these views can always be found. But, by and large, the CBC tries to be as fair and balanced as humanly possible. Every government would prefer a CBC that sang its praises all the time, but that won’t happen. With its extensive coverage of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s challenges involving his trip to the Aga Khan island, his SNC-Lavalin tribulations, and WE fiasco, it certainly hasn’t happened during his time in office.
