Being a little bit afraid does not mean panicking or being stupid - Oxford Mail

THE warning on today’s front page from our county’s head of public health is a slightly scary one.

Ansaf Azhar will tell them this month that they should seriously think about stocking up on their medicines and make sure that they get a flu jab ahead of what he says is an inevitable rise in coronavirus cases this winter.

Part of the reason he is so confident that cases are going to rise is that, he says, the current outbreaks among the younger people in our county will spread into the older people in the population.

And, if it sounds slightly scary, it should do: a big problem that this country has had during the coronavirus pandemic is that too many people have seemingly not been scared enough, at least to judge by some reckless behaviour.

Having a little bit of fear – of caution; of concern – is a good thing: this is a dangerous bug and we should not be careless about the danger is poses.

However, having said all that, we also hope and trust that the readers of the Oxford Mail will continue to behave like sensible, rational adults, as the vast, vast majority of them have throughout this pandemic.

That means that, while it is sensible for all of us to continue to be extremely wary of the dangers this new virus poses, we can carry on taking the same basic precautions that we have for months, which are known to keep us all safe.

We continue to keep our distance; we carry on wearing our masks and washing our hands regularly.

And, when our public health chief advises us to stock up on the essential medicines we know we will need over the winter, and get a flu job if we told to do so, then we do those things as well in a calm, sensible way.

There is no need for any panic-buying; there is no need for alarm or distress – just for all of us to carry on taking all those little extra measures in daily life which have kept our infection rate down.

Being afraid doesn't mean being stupid – but you'd be stupid not to be a bit afraid.

Let's block ads! (Why?)
