After switching quarterbacks mid-game against Arkansas, Georgia head coach Kirby Smart had another decision to make before his team’s game against Auburn. Smart has made that call and Stetson Bennett will be starting against the Tigers
The news broke just prior to kickoff.
“There it is: Georgia announces Stetson Bennett as its starting quarterback for tonight's game,” Jordan D. Hill of AU Blog wrote.
In the Bulldogs’ win over Arkansas last week, D’Wan Mathis got the start, but he didn’t remain in the game for long. After a tough start for Mathis that saw Arkansas leading Georgia for most of the first half, Smart decided to pull Mathis in favor of Bennett. After that, the Bulldogs were able to get into gear and cruise past the Razorbacks for the win.
Mathis saw some more playing time later in the game, and he finished with a stat line of 55 passing yards and an interception on 8-of-17 passing. Bennett turned in 211 yards and two touchdowns on 20-of-29 passing. After the game, Smart didn’t want to place all the blame for Georgia’s poor start on Mathis. He pointed out that the team made a number of mistakes at several positions, and that needs to change no matter who is under center against Auburn.
"I think he's got a lot of confidence as well. When you say the two most experienced guys, probably JT and Stetson in terms of having played football games," Smart said. "But regardless who the quarterback is, guys, we can't hold people, we can't line up in the backfield, we can't jump offsides, we can't turn the ball over, so a lot of that doesn't have to do with the quarterback position. I know that's the one everybody wants to talk about and I respect that, but I'm also smart enough and wise enough to know that's not all of the... not all the malfunctions we had were just on the quarterback."
On Monday, Smart announced that USC transfer JT Daniels had been medically cleared after suffering a torn ACL last year. That immediately added another player to the Bulldogs’ quarterback competition, but Smart insisted that it wouldn’t change too much in terms of how practice reps get divided.
"JT will be cleared but I don't know how much that changes the picture in terms of reps and development," Smart said. "We'll be looking at everybody across the board. JT's got to be able to show us that he can function efficiently and do it with his knee being able to do it. We always thought he'd be cleared by this time anyway but those guys will all compete as well as Carson (Beck) will, too."
Georgia and Auburn kick off at 7:30 ET on Saturday night in Athens.
