Smart diagnosed with Grade 1 calf strain, appears to have avoided serious injury - NBC Sports Boston

The Celtics received some positive news Sunday morning on the left calf injury sustained by Marcus Smart late in Saturday night's loss to the Los Angeles Lakers

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic, Smart has been diagnosed with a Grade 1 calf strain.

Smart clearly was in a ton of pain as he grabbed his left calf during a play in the fourth quarter. The Celtics guard had to be helped off the court and did not put any weight on his left leg while heading into the locker room. He did not return to the game.

Watch the injury below:

A Grade 1 calf strain is defined as a mild or partial stretch or tearing of a few muscle fibers. The muscle is tender and painful, but maintains its normal strength. Leg use is not limited, and walking is normal.

According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Smart is expected to be sidelined 1-2 weeks, which seems like an amazing outcome given what looked like a potentially severe injury.

It's fair to say the Celtics won't have Smart available for their upcoming five-game West Coast road trip, but it appears as if the team and Smart avoided the worst case scenario.

UPDATE (2:25 p.m. ET): The Athletic's Shams Charania cites a 2-3 week timetable for Smart's return.
