“The Masked Dancer” revealed the identity of another dancer Wednesday night, showcasing none other than survivor-turned-activist Elizabeth Smart.
- “The Masked Dancer” — a spinoff of “The Masked Singer” — is a reality show where celebrities and stars in costumes compete in a dancing competition.
What’s going on?
On Wednesday night, the show hosted the Group B playoffs. Smart was revealed to be the Moth after she failed to defeat her opponents in the dancing round.
Why it matters
Most celebrities revealed on “The Masked Singer” or “The Masked Dancer” have been singers, athletes, YouTube stars and actors. Meanwhile, Smart has become an activist for abuse survivors after she was abducted from her bedroom in 2002.
Why did she do it?
Smart told host Craig Robinson that she participated in the show to have fun.
- “My grandma actually passed away very recently, but she was so much fun. She never let a moment pass her by. And so, when this opportunity came along, I thought, ‘I live a pretty serious life, and I’m going to take this opportunity and just have fun,’” Smart said.
- “It was probably the most terrifying thing that I’ve ever voluntarily done,” Smart said. “But it was a lot of fun. I mean, how often does a person get to say that they have a whole team of people working out with them every single day, like five people working there to help make you be the best you can be.”
Judge Brian Austin Green, who was the only one to correctly judge the Moth’s identity, praised Smart for her courage.
- “Can I just say that, for what you’ve dealt with in your life, you have been an inspiration for so many people and you’ve done so much good with a really difficult situation, and we need more people like you on the planet. Thank you.”
