Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger — a longtime critic of President Donald Trump — wrote a strongly-worded op-ed in The Economist on Tuesday blasting members of his party hoping to overturn the 2020 presidential election during a special session of Congress Wednesday.
Schwarzenegger called the House and Senate objections — based on claims of widespread voter fraud that have been dismissed in courts across the country — "stupid, crazy and evil" and referenced the second "Terminator" movie.
"I once did a Terminator film called 'Judgment Day,'" he writes. "That’s just Hollywood. But January 6th is Judgment Day for a lot of politicians. Will they choose to side with the voters, or will they choose to side with their party and their selfish president?"
There are 12 Republicans in the Senate and at least 140 in the House who plan to object to the Electoral College results. In Schwarzenegger's home state of California, Reps. Kevin McCarthy, Jay Obernolte and Mike Garcia are the only three who have publicly announced their objections, and only one — Rep. Tom McClintock — has stated he will not object. The other seven Republican members of the state's delegation have not made their plans known.
"For those in my party considering standing up against the voters on January 6th, know this: our grandchildren will know your names only as the villains who fought against the great American experiment and the will of the voters," the former governor wrote. "You will live in infamy."
Schwarzenegger's op-ed takes on additional meaning following the surprise defeat of Georgia Sen. Kelly Loeffler and the likely defeat of Georgia Sen. David Perdue (the Associated Press did not call his race as of Wednesday morning) in Tuesday's special elections.
GOP operatives have blamed the president and voter fraud conspiracy theories pushed by attorneys Lin Wood and Sidney Powell for their party losing control of the Senate.
“Trump is the cause of this, lock, stock and barrel,” one Republican strategist told Politico. “But when you’re relying on someone to win you a Senate race that also lost statewide eight weeks prior, you’re not in a position of strength.”
“Turns out if the leader of a party spends two months actively delegitimizing elections and saying voting doesn’t matter, voters listen,” said a Republican who worked on the Georgia races. “There was one decisive factor in Georgia and anyone who says otherwise is probably sharing substances with Lin Wood.”
Mitch McConnell's former chief of staff, Josh Holmes, pointed towards Republicans once again getting walloped in the suburbs — an area that used to be a Republican stronghold in the state.
“Suburbs, my friends, the suburbs,” Holmes tweeted. “I feel like a one trick pony but here we are again. We went from talking about jobs and the economy to QAnon election conspiracies in 4 short years and - as it turns out- they were listening!”
It's not just the Republican establishment saying this. Daily Wire reporter Ryan Saavedra, a consistent pro-Trump voice in conservative media, tweeted, "If the political right wants to win again they need to get real about why they lost both Senate seats & the presidential election in both ruby red Arizona & Georgia. Or they can keep believing in narratives that are not supported by data/factual realities and get f—ing crushed."
