Georgia's Kirby Smart weighs in on intra-conference transfers in SEC - 247Sports

The NCAA's one-time transfer exception probably has more of an impact on college basketball than football, but more players than ever are in the portal even on the football side. One major discussion in the SEC has centered around whether the league should allow players to move schools within the league without having to sit out one season, as is the case in most other conferences.

Opinions remain split. There's always a chance that at some point a star quarterback could transfer to Alabama, and those types of scenarios would ignite huge controversy within the league.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart gave his thoughts on the discussion during an appearance on Wednesday's edition of the Paul Finebaum Show. While Smart isn't a fan of intra-conference transfers, he explained why the league may not have much of a choice.

“I’ve always believed (players) have so many opportunities across the country that if they want to go somewhere and play, they can go to — 95% of the colleges they’ll have an opportunity to go to," Smart said. "So the intra-conference has been an interesting debate. I also don’t want to penalize the SEC. If they’re able to go within other conferences, we’re gonna have a tough decision to make and our presidents and our commissioner — I have a lot of faith in both of those groups to make the right decision when it comes to whether or not they allow intra-conference transfers. But it’s gonna be an interesting dynamic because the SEC is a different conference than any other and the schools are so closely knit that you’re gonna have kids wanting to go from each school to each school.”

To Smart's point, an intra-conference transfer rule that would force players to sit out one season would guarantee that most transfers would leave the SEC. That could create a slight talent drain, even though SEC schools can pull their fair share of talent from outside the league.

It's unclear what direction the SEC will go in, although it's hard to see the league giving other Power Five conferences a competitive advantage. Smart said that the transfer portal has changed college football and that coaches are just going to have to deal with it.

“Your roster is never complete, your depth is never complete," Smart said. "I think any coach in the SEC would tell you you can go from feeling comfortable to uncomfortable really fast with the portal and kids being able to go into it. I understand that; that’s the rules we play by.”
