Georgia student-athletes will soon be able to profit on their name, image, and likeness (NIL). That’s a great opportunity for players at the University of Georgia, but it’s also something that will require quite a bit of education.
According to Steve Berkowitz of USA Today, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp will sign the state’s NIL legislation into law. He’ll be doing so during a ceremony on Georgia’s campus on Thursday.
"Office of Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp announces that he will be signing college-athlete NIL bill during ceremony Thursday at University of Georgia," Berkowitz wrote on Twitter. "This law is scheduled to take effect July 1, 2021."
In an appearance on ‘The Paul Finebaum Show,’ Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart addressed the new NIL bill that will go into effect this summer. Smart admitted that there are still a lot of unknowns about how NIL will affect college football. Properly educating the athletes on what they can and cannot do will be key for every program affected by these new policies.
“You start with education,” Smart said. “You want everybody to understand as much as we can. We don’t know the rules we’re gonna play by, so it’s like playing a game that you don’t know the rules to. So everybody’s kind of on pins and needles. It’s an education process. It’s a great opportunity for student-athletes. Where it goes, I’ll be very interested to see. Because I’m a little bit more like Charles Barkley where I don’t think everybody is gonna be as marketable as some guys. When it’s not equitable, sometimes it’s tough.”
“It’s a little like COVID. The guy that manages that best, manages the egos and the problems or benefits that may come with it is probably gonna be a little bit ahead of the opponent. We’re all trying to manage it as best we can, but right now we don’t know. We don’t know enough about how it’s gonna be enforced, how it’s gonna be enacted at the state level, the federal level. We’re gonna find out in the next couple of weeks a lot about the future.”
Tennessee also passed an NIL bill last week, which Gov. Bill Lee is expected to sign in the near future according to the Nashville Post. Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas and Florida also have bills signed, while South Carolina's has been passed but not signed by Gov. Henry McMaster yet. NIL laws are expected to change the game in recruiting, pending an NCAA decision on player eligibility in states with NIL laws. Programs will be able to sell endorsement plans tailored to specific players as part of their recruitment pitches.
