(July 1, 2021) Elizabeth Smart is a voice for hope. Eighteen years after she was kidnapped from her Utah bedroom and held for nine months, she has become a best-selling author, political activist and public speaker for survivors of sexual assault.
She’ll speak Wednesday at a free event at the First Congregational Church, sponsored by A Safe Place.
“I share my story because there are organizations like A Safe Place that work tirelessly,” Smart said. “They work with survivors, and that’s not easy. That’s an incredibly difficult task.”
It’s difficult because the physical and emotional pain does not fade, she said.
Smart was 14 when Brian David Mitchell snuck into her bedroom through a window, kidnapped her, and for the next nine months, physically and sexually abused her just a few miles from her parents’ house in Salt Lake City.
