Tuesday morning, Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart took the podium and spoke to the media at SEC Media Days in Hoover, Ala. As the offseason winds down, the expectations for the ‘Dawgs are sky high. What are they? For starters, Georgia is looking to reclaim the SEC East, win the SEC title, qualify for the College Football Playoff and most importantly winning the national championship that the Bulldog faithful have been waiting for since 1980. While the expectations and anticipation seems to loom every season for the Bulldogs, it is hard to hide it for the Bulldogs and Smart.
In his opening statement, Smart addressed the expectations by using a quote from Henry David Thoreau.
“Success comes to those who are too busy to be looking for it.” Smart repeated the statement again and went on to say, “I’m too busy working. I’m too busy trying to do the next thing. I’m too busy trying to take the next step to give our team a competitive advantage to really worry about expectations.”
The wide receiver corps is what many expect the Bulldogs to capitalize on and take them deep into the season at a possible college football playoff berth and national championship appearance. Adding Arik Gilbert along to a receivers group consisting of Kearis Jackson, Jermaine Burton, Marcus Rosemy-Jacksaint, is seeking to be part of a championship formula. In fact, it makes the offense dynamic in the words of Smart.
“With Arik [Gilbert], anytime you can get a skill player that can do things with the ball, you’re always looking to be dynamic,” said Smart. “You look at the teams that have won the national championship recently, they’re dynamic on offense and at the skill positions.”
All in all, the expectations remain high for the Bulldogs and Smart as the Bulldogs are expected to have one of the best offenses within the SEC and nation. Addictions such as Gilbert, Tykee Smith, and Derion Kendrick adds necessary talent and experience to a Bulldogs roster.
“Those guys bring an immense amount of experience,” Smart said when asked what needs do those guys fill.
Smart also loves the fact that Kendrick provides the necessary roster fill at defensive backs.“We needed someone at that position,” said Smart. “Having lost four db’s…they all got drafted. It was a dynamic situation we had to replace.”
