In the UK, there’s a commission for Smart Governance based on an independent initiative to make public administration more effective. I wonder whether such an initiative could also work for Italian public administration that has been subject to a biased perception of ineffectiveness, inefficiency and, in some cases, dishonesty for decades. I’ve often met very committed public officials and outstanding, competent public employees. I’ve also often met extraordinary people working very hard in small spaces, unhealthy conditions and in unsound organizational structures. I’ve repeatedly tried to emphasize the importance of considering all individuals as the real force in establishing how proper Governance should work. It should take all of these people into account when setting top priorities and best practices. Achieving the right balance of people, culture, and health in the next generation of sustainable companies and public administration will resolve present issues and be the real driver of future transformation of industries and services.
Therefore, if Smart Governance will include all of these key concepts (people, health, and culture), we’ll be prepared for a post-pandemic working world that reflects today’s lifestyles and a healthy work-life balance. A better society for better performance and smarter lives. Up until now, the efforts to build a smarter world have often failed as evidenced by: work overload, always being online, stressful conditions, poor social life and overall exhaustion. Perhaps, we should focus on an evolved definition of Smart Governance and, above all, should try to act more intelligently when addressing individuals’ lives — a necessary strategic pillar of every company, both public and private.
