The SEC Championship week festivities begin Sunday afternoon with the two coaches participating in teleconferences. Kirby Smart is first up at 4 p.m. CT followed by Nick Saban.
Here’s the rundown of his comments.
-- Smart said this is “one of the greatest atmospheres in sports” playing the SEC title game in Atlanta.
-- “I know Alabama well. It’s a really good football program,” Smart said.
-- Smart on Will Anderson: He said they overlapped 2-3 opponents and see he’s a “tremendous athlete.” He reminds Smart of former Alabama LB Rashaan Evans before he moved to middle LB with his “twitchy” play.
-- Smart said he hasn’t got all the way through the Iron Bowl film but he said he knows what they’re facing from the QB, WR and RB perspective.
-- On the six-game losing streak to Alabama and the fact Georgia led all six at halftime, Smart said he wasn’t a part of all of them and said there’s no real connection or overlap between the previous games.
-- “I don’t know. You have to find that out,” Smart said when asked about the fact Georgia hasn’t faced a close game this year. Alabama, for context, is 4-1 in one-score games.
-- Smart again said they don’t think about the history Georgia has with Alabama. What happened then “has no relevance to this game,” he said.
-- On the Alabama WRs, Smart said Jameson Williams is one of the best players in the country. He also noted Slade Bolden feels like he’s been at Alabama “forever.” He noted they are deep with WRs from all over the nation.
-- Smart said he believes in the strain factor and since Georgia hasn’t had to fight in too many fourth quarters, he thinks they’re fresh to play in the postseason.
-- “He’s composed at all times and he has great presence in the pocket,” Smart said of Bryce Young. He also said he has one of the quickest releases he’s seen.
