When you look to Congress, it seems that America is just plain nuts when it comes to guns. The agreement that 20 senators unveiled on Monday is a welcome step, but even if it passes, we’ll still have the weakest laws among all advanced countries. American kids will still be permitted to buy a rifle before they’re permitted to buy a beer. Try explaining that to someone from France.
But if you look to the public, America is a more reasonable place. Most Americans want stricter gun laws, according to the latest Gallup poll. Even Americans who own guns favor modest reform, like raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 21, requiring background checks, and enacting red flag laws that allow friends and family to intervene in the courts when they see evidence that a loved one with a gun may be about to use it.
