Here are today's Ottawa Sun letters to the editor.

Am I the only one who thinks the recent decision to decriminalize small amounts of hard-core drugs in B.C. is an insane one? Are politicians actually that stupid to think that that is going to quell the increase in opioid deaths? I’m sorry, but there is no other word to describe this but stupid. Using this logic, if there’s an increase in violent crimes, should we then take those crimes off the books as well?

While they’re at it, why don’t they just send out an invite to all the gangs and drug cartels? Oh, wait, maybe the Liberal/NDP government will offer up grants for them to set up their drug labs. As drug use becomes less stigmatized, I’m wondering how people will feel about the increase in other crimes that will no doubt happen as these users try to finance their daily fixes.

I just can’t stop shaking my head. It’s bad enough that the federal government is aiding and abetting illegal immigrants, but now they’re helping to facilitate another illegal business. Pretty sure Canadians didn’t vote for that.

(Maybe next time around, more Canadians will get out and not vote for that.)

ADDICT PARADISE

It has started in B.C. and no doubt will make its way across the nation, and that is the decriminalization and legalization of almost all drugs. This will be an economic and human catastrophe. Instead of trying to get folks into treatment centres to help turn around their lives, it is far easier and much cheaper to have them die slowly.

Mr. Freeze is on a gun confiscation witch hunt, which will do nothing to improve public safety except make the criminals’ lives easier. Many more people are perishing from opioid and other drug overdoses in this country than guns will ever kill off.

Also, in another matter, the OPP are investigating two swastikas written on an outdoor trail near Embrun. Let’s hope they do not call in major crime for this. This is obviously youth scribbling vile symbols of which they really have no comprehension. Let’s not play this up, it just eggs them on. Move on, people.

GENETICALLY MODIFIED FOOD

Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos has very recently allowed Health Canada to give up its role as independent regulator when it comes to the safety of some genetically modified (GM) foods.

The decision means that Canadians could soon be eating some unreported, unknown GM foods that have not been assessed for safety by Health Canada. Biotechnology companies now have an open door to the market for some GM foods produced with new gene-editing techniques. If a food comes from a plant that was genetically modified without incorporating DNA from another species (it has no foreign DNA), then the company can decide if the food is safe to eat, without any government oversight. Companies can sell these GM foods without telling the government that they exist.

Companies will have total control over their food safety reviews and the information available for the public. This is a dangerous move away from independent science and transparency. Soon, the agriculture minister could approve similar changes for gene-edited seeds, leaving both consumers and farmers in the dark. Canadians should speak up before that happens.

(A slippery slope, indeed.)
