While Texas was busy making huge news on the football side Saturday by firing coach Tom Herman and replacing him with Steve Sarkisian on the same day, the hardwood Longhorns pulled off one of the best wins in program history at No. 3 Kansas. Not only was it an extremely rare win for Texas — or anyone else — at Allen Fieldhouse, but the Horns made an absolute statement by winning 84-59 in an utterly dominant performance.
Five Longhorns scored in double figures, led by Courtney Ramey with 18 points. But it was more about the overall team effort, as Texas held Kansas to 30.8% shooting from the field and just 3 of 23 from 3-point range.
Texas is now 8-1 and is putting itself on pace to be a No. 1 or No. 2 seed in the 2021 NCAA Tournament, although there's a long way to go. After the win, coach Shaka Smart addressed the media and praised his players for all of the hard work they've put in during a difficult season amid COVID-19. Here's everything Smart said.
OPENING STATEMENT:
“Just proud of their guys, the way they handled everything coming out of Christmas. We were missing two of our best energy guys today in Kamaka (Hepa) and Royce (Hamm), and just having the ability for everyone else to step forward and give each other energy, we knew we had to come in here with a commitment to the defensive end. Kansas is a terrific offensive team, terrific defensive team and our guys really did a good job following the game plan.”
