BOSTON - When Marcus Smart went down with a torn calf muscle in the Celtics’ Jan. 30 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, the most optimistic prognosis for his return was two weeks out of action.

Saturday marks 14 days since the injury and Smart said he’s not near a return.

“I’m feeling good. Each day getting better. It’s obviously nowhere near where we wanted to be to coming back,” he said. “We’re just taking it slow. Taking it day by day. There’s no big timeline I can give. ...My body is definitely healing. We expected it to. but it’s definitely going to take some time.”

Smart suffered the painful-looking injury early in the fourth quarter of the 96-95 loss to the Lakers at TD Garden. Initially, it looked like Smart had collided with Montrezl Harrell after blocking his shot, but Smart revealed Friday the injury was noncontact. Smart felt a pop and yelled audibly and had to be helped to the locker room and did not return.

“That pop sent a painful burning sensation down my whole leg,” Smart said. “Thank God it wasn’t my Achillies or anything worse, but it still hurts like hell. But I’m blessed it’s nothing worse.”

The calf tear was determined by an MRI the next day. Smart said he didn’t know what conditions led to a noncontact injury.

“It was just kind of one of those things that happened. The stars aligned the right way and my calf gave out,” he said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if it had something to do with the quick turnaround from playing in the bubble and coming back. Who knows?”

Smart said he’s not rushing the healing process.

“You’ve got to listen to your body and let it do what it does. We are making great strides,” he said. “I’ve done some things on the court, just trying to test it out. Light basketball activities right now. I can get my shot up. I can run a little bit off of it, about 30-40 percent. But mostly just getting my calf stronger, doing a lot of calf raises and things of that nature.”
