Nick Kyrgios was up to his old tricks during his second singles match in almost 12 months, blasting the chair umpire and then stopping play in protest against fellow Aussie Harry Bourchier.
Kyrgios mounted his protest at 5-5 in the second set after being called for a time violation while in the motion of serving on Wednesday night.
The 25-year-old exploded at the umpire who he called “a peanut” and demanded the tournament supervisor come and resolve the issue.
“I’m not playing, get the supervisor,” Kyrgios said as he walked to his chair and sat down.
“I was serving, why did you have to call it? I was in the motion of serving.
“Every technique is different.”
The supervisor then arrived and Kyrgios unleashed.
“Tennis isn’t about him, he’s an extra to make all this sh*t go smoothly. He’s a smart arse and now I have to get fined for it.
“I don’t understand why these guys (umpires) think it’s about them.
“I want to talk about it now, I’ve lost enough money to this peanut.”
Kyrgios eventually returned to the court and clinched the match 6-2 7-6 at the Murray River Open.
The Canberran was initially angered in the first set when the umpire failed to call a let on Bourchier’s serve after the computer failed to pick it up.
“Why didn’t you call it?” Kyrgios demanded.
Despite his frustration, Kyrgios still managed to break serve but then appeared to tell the umpire he’d made a “stupid call” when sitting down between games at 5-2.
The latest drama happened just one day after reportedly telling his entourage he was “f***ing zero chance of playing the Open” during his comeback match win against Alex Muller.
Kyrgios returned on Tuesday night to play a doubles match alongside childhood friend Matt Reid, which they lost to Americans Frances Tiafoe and Nicholas Monroe.
Meanwhile, Alexei Popyrin, Alex Bolt, James Duckworth and Jordan Thompson have led a stacked local contingent into the third round of the Melbourne Summer Series.
Bolt wrestled to a three-set win over Mackenzie McDonald to book a showdown with top-seeded former Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka, while Popyrin accounted for another American in Tommy Paul , 6-4 6-3.
Duckworth scored a rousing 7-6 (8-6) 6-4 upset win over seventh seed Ugo Humbert before Thompson joined the party with a 6-4 3-6 6-3 victory over another Frenchman in Pierre-Hugues Herbert.
With 13 Australian men in action on Wednesday at Melbourne Park, including Davis Cup stars Kyrgios and John Millman, hopes were high the local representation in the last 16 of the two events would further swell.
But Jason Kubler fell 7-6 (7-2) 7-5 to Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis while Aleksandar Vukic was beaten 6-2 6-4 by Italian Jannik Sinner.
South Australian Bolt, who has a wildcard into next week’s Australian Open, overcame world No.194 McDonald 6-4 6-7 (9-7) 7-5.
Bolt is a proven summer performer, taking last year’s finalist Dominic Thiem to five sets in the second round of the Open and gets another opportunity to claim a big scalp against Wawrinka, a 4-6 6-3 6-1 winner over Mikhail Kukushkin of Kazakhstan.
Popyrin saved six match points in his opening contest of the Murray River Open against Borna Gojo but had a much easier time against Paul.
He swept the world No.53 in straight sets to line up a meeting with either Bulgarian second seed Grigor Dimitrov or fellow Australian Andrew Harris.
