Earlier today, Ariel Helwani posted a clip from the first NFL match of this season. It showed the players standing together in solidarity during the national anthem, while fans booed. Helwani went on to criticize the ‘fans’ saying they do not deserve to watch such athletes live. Furthermore, while a pandemic is raging, the players are risking their health to provide the people at home some entertainment. UFC Middleweight champion Israel Adesanya chimed in on the tweet.
Israel Adesanya agrees with Helwani’s assessment of fans
In a fitting reply to Ariel’s tweet, Adesanya said, ”Fans as individuals can be awesome, but as a whole, they’re meek and stupid sometimes. I said what I said, bite me.”
Similarly, fans of the UFC want every fight to end in a spectacular knockout or a technical submission, but that is seldom. When it happens, it is awesome, and it’s one of the reasons why the sport is so loved. But on the other hand, if a fight does the distance it does not mean that it was not entertaining.
Israel Adesanya’s last fight was a 5 round unanimous decision win against Yoel Romero, a fight he asked for and was granted. Most fans thought the fight would not go the distance. They expected a five-round, back and forth, edge-of-the-seat action. However, this was not the case. The fight was slow throughout and was met with a lot of boos from the audience

For fans, it’s easy to get upset when a fight such as the Adesanya vs Romero takes place. However, even in a slow fight, there are a lot of nuances that the untrained eye cannot pick up.
Fighting amidst a pandemic
In a time when the world has come to a grinding halt, fighters have to sacrifice a lot more than they would normally have to. The likes of Dan Hooker and Alex Volkanovski, after reaching home, had to isolate away from their families for two weeks.
Fighters not only put themselves at risk, they also expose their families just so that fans can enjoy live sports entertainment on Saturday nights. During a pandemic, when most sports are stopped, the UFC and the fighters have kept going. Despite the health risks, the fighters continue to push through to keep the show going.
Fans as individuals can be awesome, but as a whole they are meek and stupid sometimes.
