A party invitation is making the rounds online thanks to its unusual dinner tier system.
According to the invitation, guests are given certain meal options depending on the generosity of their cash gift.
“So that we may prepare your preferred dinner, please circle your gift level and indicate a meal choice for each person in your party,” the invitation reads.
The lowest tier — a “loving gift” up to $250 — gets a guest either roast chicken or swordfish. The next tier — a “silver gift” between $251 and $500 — gives the guest the same options with the additional choices of sliced steak or poached salmon.
The third tier — a “golden gift” between $501 and $1,000 — offers the above choices plus filet mignon and lobster tails. And finally, the fourth tier — a “platinum gift” anywhere from $1,001 to more than $2,500 — comes with all of the above choices or 2 lbs. lobster and a souvenir champagne goblet. Vegetarian and kosher meals are only available at the platinum gift level.
A snapshot of the invite was shared to Reddit’s r/weddingshaming forum on Sept. 16, where it quickly received more than 1,000 upvotes and hundreds of comments from angry and confused users.
“You only get a vegetarian option if you do the biggest gift option? These people have lost their damn minds,” one person said.
“That is horrific,” another user added. “My response would be $0 and I will bring McDonald’s.”
“Too stupid for words,” a third person commented in disbelief. “Let’s just let everyone know how rich or poor your guests are. I would be so pissed by this I would not go at all based on this alone.”
Based on the context of the post, it’s unclear whether the invitation is for a wedding or a fundraiser. However, people noted that the tiers are tacky regardless, especially considering that vegetarian and kosher meals are only offered at the highest level.
“Even if it’s a fundraiser, why are dietary restrictions being punished like that?” one person asked.
“I work for an event and that would be incredibly disrespectful to guests to tier their meals based on giving levels,” another person noted.
I don’t even want to imagine how much I’d have to pay as a gluten-free pescatarian!
