If the idea of a safe conjures up images of wheels and combination locks, it's time to update your understanding of at-home asset protection.
Below are a few options of futuristic security you can employ at your abode.
Verifi Smart Safe S6000
The Verifi Smart Safe S6000 is so confident in its fingerprint sensor that it eschews the backup keypad entry that comes standard on most other biometric safes—and Verifi has good reason to be proud of its scanner. Verifi’s TouchChip sensor is larger and more detail-oriented, capturing more of a user’s fingerprint to accurately identify and grant (or deny) access to the S6000.
And the TouchChip technology is more than just a large scanner. The 3D capacitive sensor is capable of reading below the surface of the skin, identifying users despite worn or dirty prints, while also determining when it is interacting with living tissue—a requirement for unlocking the safe—thus preventing any spoofing by fingerprint photocopies or similar tricks.
The S6000’s smart sensors aren’t restricted to its fingerprint scanner either. The safe can also detect the position of the door at any moment, and locks automatically when closed, negating the need to manually lock the device.
The Verifi Smart Safe S6000, which can store up to 40 different fingerprints—and sounds an alarm when one not on file is used—is available for $325.
Night Owl
If you’re ready to embrace the future of home safes, outfit yourself with the Night Owl. This Wi-Fi-enabled smart safe maintains constant cloud connectivity, meaning it will instantly alert you—anywhere in the world—via app whenever your safe has been opened or closed. Night Owl will even give users an immediate heads up if the keypad has been touched or if the safe has been moved from the location where you left it.
In addition to the security of constant connection and monitoring, the pry-resistant lockbox maintains an easily searchable archive of all the times your safe has been breached or an alert has been sent.
The Night Owl, which features a four-button code sequence for entry and offers 24/7 customer service in English, Spanish and French, is available for $179.
Motorola Flex Smart Safe
Outfitted with patented expandable wings that let you lodge it wherever you please in a matter of seconds, the Motorola Flex is a semi-portable safe solution that doesn’t skimp on the smarts. This Wi-Fi-connected security device will send real-time alerts to your smartphone or tablet whenever the safe is opened, closed or an incorrect code is entered on the keypad. The Flex can even be programmed to send reminders about its contents, like when it’s time to take medication.
And if you prefer to have in-person audio/visual alerts, the Flex is capable of providing those as well. Better still, the always-connected safe allows you to open it from anywhere in the world, meaning you can give trusted parties access even if you’re out of the country.
The Motorola Flex Smart Safe is available for $129.
Yale Smart Cabinet Lock
Turn any cabinet or drawer into a smart safe with the Yale Smart Cabinet Lock. This clever contraption consists of two elements: a lock which attaches to the inside of your cabinet or drawer, and a key-tab that attaches to the cabinet or drawer door and inserts into the lock. The lock and key keep the cabinet securely closed until a user releases them via app control or voice command, as the Yale has Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant integration.
The Yale Smart Cabinet Lock plans to launch this fall, but a price has not been announced yet. More information is available at YaleHome.com.
