New York — A party thrown by a New York City Republican club that featured little mask wearing, but plenty of close dancing risked further spread of Covid-19, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said today.

Video of the event shows participants dancing maskless in a conga line to the Bee Gees.

“If you do not take precautions, your likelihood that you will get the virus is higher,” Cuomo said today during a conference call with reporters. “Covid conga lines are not smart. That’s my official position.”

The Dec. 9 party, thrown by the Whitestone Republican Club in Queens, attracted a crowd of at least 50 people, according to the New York Daily News. City Council candidate Vickie Paladino, conservative media personality Christopher Wright and former conservative candidate for New York State Assembly James Martinosky were among the attendees.

The event took place at at Il Bacco Ristorante in Queens, which sued the state in September to reopen indoor dining, according to the News.

Despite the video showing maskless dancing, a club board member told the News pandemic protocols were followed. He said all attendees were told to wear a mask and all had one when entering, or were given one.

“We felt it was important coming out of such a highly emotional election that we hold some kind of gathering to bring in the holidays,” said the board member, Robert Hornak, according to the News.

Cuomo said the pandemic requires everyone in the state to be smart.

“Why you would so an unmasked conga line in the middle of a Covid pandemic, whatever your political persuasion, defies logical explanation as far as I’m concerned,” he said.
