Elizabeth Smart — known as the Utah girl who was found after being kidnapped — remembered her liberation from captivity and reaffirmed her faith in goodness and miracles on her Instagram account.
Smart was abducted at 14 from her bedroom and despite rigorous searching by her family and community, she was taken from Utah to California. She was kept and raped by a man and his wife who used religion to justify their assaults. Both received jail sentences.
Smart has become public figure who speaks about sexual assault and has become a hope to many. On her Instagram account she spoke of the day she returned to Utah and freedom. She said:
because of this one day I will never loose my faith in the goodness of humanity and in miracles. I am forever grateful
"It wasn’t until I saw my dad and he started hugging me again that I knew I was safe," she said.
Smart's ordeal, and her Instagram post, didn't begin with hope or joy.
"I remember 18 years ago today waking up to someone climbing on top of me to rape me. For the previous nine months that wasn’t anything new, everyday had been a continuation of rape, manipulation, and lies," she said.
"There were kind strangers that morning one who only drove us a few miles and dropped us off," Smart wrote of part of the reason her hope in humanity was kept alive. Police stopped Smart and her captors, separated them and helped her feel safe enough that she could admit who she was and be reunited with her family.
Smart not only has hope in humanity but gives hope as well. Her Instagram post has almost 1,500 comments from people who also remember when she was miraculously found and expressed when her story means to them person.
Her Elizabeth Smart Foundation describes itself as: "Bringing hope and ending the victimization and exploitation of sexual assault through prevention, recovery, and advocacy.." Visit her foundation's account as: instagram.com/elizabethsmartfoundation/.
