Former Texas coach Shaka Smart was introduced as the new leader of Marquette men's basketball this week, a quick and tidy hire by the Golden Eagles, who are intent on getting back to the NCAA Tournament under a new regime.
"This a special family-oriented place and program that's going to be extremely attractive to future players," Smart said, according to the Journal Sentinel. "I'm already hearing that with a lot of guys. To our current players and future players, you will not find a coach that has more passion and enthusiasm pouring into you as a person and helping you become the person you can be."
Smart is hoping to bring the Golden Eagles back to national relevance as a March Madness mainstay. Marquette went 13-14 this season and reached the NCAA tournament twice in Steve Wojciechowski's seven-year tenure.
"We sent out a message welcoming Shaka on Friday to our broader community, our alumni," Marquette president Michael Lovell said, "(and) on Saturday, I looked at the account and I had 237 emails in the inbox. Usually when that happens, something's happening ... well I had 237 positive messages about that hire, not a single negative one. It shows how excited our community is about welcoming Shaka with his background.
"With the success he's experienced on the court. We've never had a coach we've hired that has already been to a Final Four."
