Shaka Smart is off to a new adventure in his coaching career as the 43-year-old coach left Texas this week to take the job at Marquette. The move was one that shocked the media and saved the Longhorns some significant money that they would have had to pay Smart if he was fired from the job. And on Sunday, Smart arrived at his new home.
On Sunday, Marquette posted a video from its basketball program’s Twitter account of Smart landing at the airport and getting into a car. Marquette said in the tweet that it was eager to introduce Smart to the community on Monday.

The move for Smart to leave Texas for Marquette stunned many, as he had appeared to find some success with the Longhorns this year. Smart led his team to a 19-7 overall record after winning the Big 12 Tournament. That earned the Longhorns a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament and a date with Abilene Christian. But the 14th-seeded Wildcats stunned the Longhorns in what would be Smart’s last game at the school.
Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman noted after the move the financial impact that Texas saved. Had the Longhorns made the decision to fire Smart after that loss in the first round of the tournament, they would have owed him $7.1 million.
