One year after the coronavirus pandemic started to shut down the sports world, life is slowly returning to normal. Fans have been allowed to return to ballparks in a limited capacity during spring training. Most MLBteams have plans to allow a capped percentage of fans to attend Opening Day. And then there are the Texas Rangers. Per MLB.com:

For their home opener against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 5 -- as well as two exhibitions at the end of Spring Training against Milwaukee on March 29-30 -- Globe Life Field will be open for up to 100 percent capacity. These will be the first games the Rangers will play at their new home park with fans in attendance.

The move doesn’t come as complete surprise. Last week, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott “opened the entire state and businesses fully and ended the mask mandate.” The move also doesn’t sit well with many people, including New York Yankees broadcaster Suzyn Waldman, who was asked about it by partner John Sterling during Wednesday’s game against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

John: Suzyn, just to talk about Texas, who have said for Opening Day they’re going to open the ballpark.

Suzyn: I’m glad I’m not there.

John: They’ll fill it.

Suzyn: I’m glad I’m not there. Stupid.

Last month, N.Y. Gov. Andrew Cuomo cleared the way for fans to return to stadiums in New York state at 10% capacity. That means the Yankees will be permitted to have about 5,400 fans in attendance at Yankee Stadium on April 1 vs. the Blue Jays.
